Because Nine Men's Morris is a game that dates back to the Roman empire, it goes by over a dozen different names. The player with three or more pieces remaining wins. The game ends when a player has less than three pieces remaining on the board. When this happens, the player can move one of their last three pieces to any empty spot on the board during their turn in an attempt to build mills. When a player only has three pieces remaning on the board, they enter what is called "flying mode". This continues until one of the players has only three pieces remaining. However, unlike before, you can only move pieces to adjacent empty spots on the board. As with before, the goal is to build Mills and remove your oppoent's pieces from the board. Once both players have all of their pieces on the board, they start moving their pieces on their turns. This continues until each player has all of their pieces on the board. When a player completes a Mill, they can remove any of their opponent's pieces from the board. ![]() Players build mills by getting three of their pieces in a row vertically or horizontally. The main game mechanic of Nine Men's Morris is building mills. Pieces can only be placed on and moved to empty intersections and corners on the board. Phase 1: Placing piecesĪt the beginning of the game, players take turns placing pieces on the board. Each player starts the game with nine pieces each. Nine men's morris is played on a board with three squares inside of each other, these squares are connect with vertical and horizantal lines (like the board seen above). There are several variations of the games with most well known (and oldest) version being Nine Men's Morris. They are played on a board with a series of contained squares with each player using a certain amount of stones.
